ULTRA-FILTRATION TEST PLAN

Operation

Ø          Operator dose is acceptable

·        Projected annual dose must be < 150 mr for operation and maintenance of unit

Ø          Start up, run and shut down time is acceptable

·        Project manpower required to run unit for one year.  Compare to operation of other RW systems.

Ø          Monitoring and operating devices

·        Access to valves, indicators, etc does not present a safety or ALARA concern.

Ø          Sampling

·        All sample points shall be obtained in an installed sample sink.

Membrane

Ø          Should process 5,000 gallons without requiring a flush

Ø          Evaluate flushing procedure

·        Amount of water used does not increase processing load

Ø          Biofouling control

·        Before and after membrane DP should be equal, if not project membrane life.  Lifetime should be > 3 years

·        Amount of water used does not increase processing load

·        Method for chemical cleaning of membrane is acceptable to RW personnel

Permeate Flow

Ø          Should average > 6 gpm for each membrane while processing 5,000 gallons of wastewater.

SCS Loading

Ø          Process a minimum of 5,000 gallons without requiring solids removal

Ø          Project curie & isotopic loading for full storage container

·        Use Radman to determine shipping class

·        Project system run time to meet burial requirements

·        Determine number of shipments required to dispose of waste each fuel cycle

·        Determine if cost of waste disposal is within budget

Ø          Project annual dose required for change outs

·        Projected annual dose must be < 150 mr for operation and maintenance of unit

Ø          Evaluate flushing procedure

·        Amount of water used does not increase processing load

Demin Loading

Ø          Project amount of water that can be processed before bed is expired

Ø          Project curie & isotopic loading for each expired bed

·        Use Radman to determine shipping class

·        Project each bed's run time to meet burial requirements

·        Determine number of shipments required to dispose of waste each fuel cycle

·        Determine if cost of waste disposal is within budget

Ø          Project annual dose required for change outs

·        Projected annual dose must be < 150 mr for operation and maintenance of unit

Ø          Determine maximum acceptable conductivity for system operation

·        Develop action plan to attain required levels

Effluents

Ø          Whole body dose <1.5E-4 mrem/100,000 gallons (0.03 mrem/year / 200 batches)

Ø          Organ dose <5.0E-4 mrem/100,000 gallons (0.1 mrem/year / 200 batches)

Ø          Curies released: <1.25E-3 curies/100,000 gallons (0.25curies/year / 200 batches)

Other Consideration

Ø          Determine if one demineralizer configuration can be used for all water sources

Ø          Determine if ALF demineralizer system can be used with ultra-filtration unit during outage

Ø          Evaluate processing secondary water for pri-sec leak

·        Ultra-filtration fits needs of established plans without evaporator operation

Ø          Dose rates outside of building are acceptable

·        No accessible areas > 2 mr/hr
